Earthquake Response
The devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, killed more than 250,000 people and left hundreds of thousands of others homeless and injured. Beyond Borders moved swiftly to respond to the unprecedented need by helping develop a network of nearly two dozen small-to-medium-sized organizations that came to be called the Haiti Response Coalition. In the days and weeks following the quake, we provided emergency food, fuel, clean water, medicine, medical care, and shelter to tens of thousands of quake victims. Our most unique contribution was helping develop and direct the international effort to find, register, protect, and reunify children separated from their families. (See Child Protection.)
Beyond Borders staff and volunteers gather with the Limyè Lavi team in Jacmel, Haiti, for two days of planning earlier this year.
