Rethinking Power
Sexual and domestic violence create widespread suffering in Haiti and exacerbate the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Rethinking Power is a new Beyond Borders initiative that will help local organizations develop programs to prevent this violence by addressing its root causes. With the support of the International Rescue
Committee, Rethinking Power is adapting for Haiti cutting-edge strategies and materials that were developed by Raising Voices in Uganda. New staff for this program have completed baseline surveys for attitudes around sexual violence, launched pilot programming in five communities, and provided emergency training in response to the wave of sexual violence in tent settlements.
Left: Sara Siebert joined our staff in Haiti to lead in the development of Rethinking Power. She comes with 13 years of experience in Africa, Latin America, and Asia working to help local organizations develop initiatives to prevent gender-based violence.
Right: Leaders of Kofaviv participate in a planning retreat supported by Rethinking Power. Kofaviv is a 3,000-member organization of rape survivors that is an important partner with Beyond Borders in both the Rethinking Power and the Child Protection programs.
