A New Book for Discussing God, Faith, and Life in Haiti
Our theology discussion book is the newest material in Creole added to our Living Words Christian education program. Participants who have already used the book range from development workers to pastors, from people who are college graduates to those who are illiterate and have never attended school. Discussions launch from a range of authors from C.S. Lewis, Simone Weil, Leonardo Boff, Julian of Norwich, Martin Luther King Jr., and many more.
“These are some of the best theological discussions I’ve ever experienced in church groups,” said Enel Angervil, one of our Haitian leaders.
The Creole books feature twenty-five accessible passages on subjects like the incarnation, grace, death, prayer, suffering, community. They raise stimulating, relevant questions. The book also provides a guide for group discussion based on Reflection Circles, which helps groups work on participatory approaches to education (the learners are active) and on servant leadership (the leader facilitates rather than telling everyone else what to think).
We’ve printed our first 1,000 copies, and we hope to be able to print more soon (they cost $1.25 each to print). These new books are giving people in Haiti new opportunities to engage in education through conversation. They’re also giving people a chance to engage together in theology, as the discipline of faith seeking understanding.
