Two New Initiatives to Include the Excluded

Beyond Borders is helping launch Partners in Local Development (PLD), a new Haitian organization that is working to increase the capacity of rural people to overcome poverty and improve their lives.

PLD brings together an experienced team of Haitian professionals with expertise in rural participatory development.  They are strengthening rural grassroots organizations that serve over 115,000 people in 122 communities, helping them expand and increase sustainable agricultural production, income generation, local micro-credit and savings programs, community and reproductive health training, collective leadership development, and natural and disaster risk management.  One of several concrete objectives for PLD this year is the creation of 250 new farmer cooperatives.

Funding for this new initiative comes from the Vista Hermosa Foundation. Beyond Borders is serving as the fiscal agent for PLD, which is also a founding member of Groundswell International, a global collaboration promoting grassroots rural development.

Also with generous support from the Vista Hermosa Foundation, Beyond Borders is supporting an innovative rural school initiative that invests in collectively managed projects that generate income for community schools in six rural communities. This initiative is being documented on video by Haiti Partners for part of a training program for other rural communities.

PLD staff members are experts in helping rural communities organize to solve problems with their own resources.  Through community meetings like this, they encourage collective leadership from people who understand the complex needs of the community the best.
