What We Do

Training Haitians to solve the greatest problems in their communities.

It’s estimated that more than 10,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operate in Haiti today.  Beyond Borders is different from the other organizations not because of what we do, but how we do it.

Beyond Borders equips Haitians with the skills and resources they need to build movements themselves to overcome some of Haiti’s most pressing issues.  Ending child slavery, guaranteeing universal access to education, ending violence against women and girls, and supporting sustainable livelihoods are the movements we’re helping Haitians build.

We are guided by the Haitian proverb, “Wòch nan dlo pa konn mizè wòch nan solèy,” which means, “The rock in the water doesn’t understand the misery of the rock in the sun.”  We believe that Haitians are best equipped to bring about lasting social change.  Instead of trying to do it for them, our goal is to equip them with the tools they need to succeed.

We help Haitians recognize and build upon their own strengths.  We work with them to build movements by helping them organize, facilitating dialogue among neighbors, and building relationships that generate an awareness of important issues and an understanding of how to make a difference.
