The Need for Living Words

What are the needs that Living Words seeks to meet?

Bible Closed Book: About 60% of Haitians are illiterate. Many are too poor to own Bibles. Too often churches do not work to give full participation to the faithful who are illiterate and who face cultural discrimination (in and out of the church) because they have little or no education.

Lack of Books: With very little printed material in Creole, there is a great need to develop and print quality biblical and theological resources.

Untrained Teachers and Pastors: Good approaches to education are often lacking in churches and schools in Haiti. Many pastors have little biblical, theological, or pedagogical training--and lay people have almost no chance for such education too. We develop paticipatory education materials because we believe God can speak through Scripture to us--that we would know God’s love for us and will for our lives.

Authoritarian Leaders: There is a need for models of servant leadership in a place where leadership at all levels--in politics, church, and families--tends toward dictatorial.

Spiritual Needs: There is always a need in any place (America and Haiti included) for spiritual growth in our lives. Living Words provides Haitians with practices for life-long spiritual growth.
