Other Reflections on Listening...

In Grateful
Memory of
John Rawley

John Rawley, a dear friend and former Beyond Borders board member, went home to be with the Lord on November 3. John, who was a veteran of WWII and a former executive of Hershey Foods, played a tremendously important role in the early

years of Beyond Borders, guiding us through the development of our mission and planning, and helping   John Rawley(standing) sharing thoughts with Child Literacy Program Coordinator, Fenold Appolon (seated).

shape our organizational culture. John helped us find ways of making sure that everyone's voice is heard who has a stake in our work. He encouraged us each to take time alone to reflect, write, and then share our thoughts from this with each other.

For John, decisions needed to be concrete. “What are you going to do about it Monday morning?” he would often ask. He would remind us to stay focused on our mission and that all our plans had to “devolve into work.” John practiced what he preached. He always kept a little card in his shirt pocket that listed his priorities for the day along with his personal mission statement, the prayer of St. Francis.

John is survived by his wife, Linda, and his children, Polly, Ken, Jeff, and Jay. We will deeply miss John and will be ever grateful for his selfless and rich contribution to our lives and our work.

"Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom promised to those who love him?" James 2:5
