away
by your parents as a child to live and work in the
home of a family you do not know that forces you to
work sixteen-hour days for no pay or time to play,
form friendships, or go to school. An estimated 300,000
Haitian children live as unpaid domestic servants,
many in slavelike conditions like these.
Over
the past decade Beyond Borders has helped provide
thousands of Haitian servant children with a basic
education, time to play, form friendships, and learn
about their inherent worth as children made and loved
by God. These children are deeply grateful for this
opportunity.
But
it would be far better if children could remain with
their families and have the chance to attend school.
That is why we are working to end child servitude
in Haiti altogether through our support of the Children’s
Rights Campaign led by our partner in mission in Haiti,
the Limyè Lavi foundation.
A
growing number of local, national, and international
organizations have joined this campaign and gather
with us every two months to plan and organize. We
recently teamed up with the National Coalition for
Haitian Rights, which brings strong leadership and
a variety of resources to the campaign. Together we
are planning a variety of activities together over
the coming months.
