Beyond Borders also promotes an alternative paradigm of ministry for people concerned about Haiti, one that is also based on mutual respect and a realization that we have as much need for Haiti and her people as

we have to give. We promote this alternative approach to ministry through two programs, Transformational Travel, which takes small groups to Haiti for one to two weeks, and the Apprenticeship in Shared Living (ASL), an alternative volunteer program that provides one to two year terms in Haiti.

Here's some of what others have said about these programs:

“I continue to be washed by waves of gratitude, amazement, challenge, and even some sadness when I think of all that I experienced [in Haiti]…I feel that I was touched on so many levels—spiritual, cultural, emotional, and intellectual… For me, the experience far exceeded any dreams I might have had for what would occur… Being in Haiti was an incredibly spiritual experience for me. I felt God’s presence so strongly in Haiti—most strongly in the people I met. And I felt the Spirit more strongly in myself too.”
Cara Kennedy, Transformational Travel participant, July 2003

“The Apprenticeship in Shared Living program is an incredible opportunity that keeps on giving to all involved with it and is the ultimate answer to the common authoritarian model of ministry. Every aspect of the program speaks to a true partnership with Haitians. Having entered Haiti as a learner in the ASL program, I would never consider entering another country any other way. The program makes you take off your shoes and honor what is present in your Haitian community already before you even think about finding a role there. I truly believe that the experience of becoming a learner and immersing oneself into the community is of such great value in and of itself—that the bridges that are built, the understanding, the friendship, the trust... will ripple out both within that community, and in everything you do thereafter.”
Dawn Lewandowski, Apprentice in Shared Living, 1997-98
