Above: Madame Tiano, the Haitian woman in this report who hosts part of the group in her home on Lagonav island, sits practicing her writing in a literacy center supported by Beyond Borders.

Madame Tiano also participates in the Wonn Refleksyon or Reflection Circle project. The Reflection Circle text which she reads and is so fond of is a selection from Plutarch's Lives on the legendary Spartan king, Lycurgus, who passed a law requiring the rich and poor to eat together. That night, in her home, the rich and poor ate together, though in humility, Madame Tiano and her husband refuse to eat at the table with their honored guests.

Radio Report on Beyond Borders

Reporter Marianne McCune, from the National Public Radio affiliate in New York City, WNYC, visits Haiti and joins a Transformational Travel team from St. Petersburg, Florida on a visit they make with Beyond Borders to the island of Lagonav. They stay in the home of Madame Tiano, who recently learned to read and write in an adult literacy center supported by Beyond Borders and who is a participant in the Reflection Circle (Wonn Refleksyon) Project.
